Why is the download so small?

AVG explains how the AVG Download Manager is used to ensure you get the latest file available in the smallest package possible.

Melbourne, 23 April 2010 – AVG (AU/NZ) Pty Ltd is often asked about the size of the download files on its web site and on portals such as CNET's download.com. The reason for the small size is that it launches a small intelligent installer, the AVG Download Manager, which gives the following benefits:

Speed and Efficiency - Rather than downloading the all encompassing installation file, the AVG Download Manager allows us to provide only the components you require during the installation process. So selecting English means we only send you the files required for this language rather than you downloading all the languages that you don't need. This cuts the download size down significantly and brings you the benefit of speed and space.

Latest Protection - The second reason is a little more complex! If we deliver you the entire product installation package, then we have to create it at a point in time. The program and anti-malware files are based on a creation date and as you know we update our product several times a day to give you the best protection. Once installed the product would then require an update to bring it up to the install date protection level, causing a further step and additional time to install. Because the small installer is dynamic and customised to your configuration, you download only the latest product and anti-malware protection. Sometimes the version or build number posted on a download portal description might not reflect the product being downloaded and installed; don't be concerned by this, it just means we are ahead of the description update which may be manual. Less to download and no need to update after installation, a win-win situation!
